FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASESUSPECT CHARGED IN CONNECTION WITH THE SEPTMBER 13, 2007, ROBBERY OF BB&T BANK IN CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA Charlotte, NC – The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) and the FBI Charlotte Safe Streets Task Force wish to announce that on September 14, 2007, Jerry Smith, 49, of Charlotte, NC, turned himself in to the CMPD and was subsequently charged with robbery (common law), a state felony charge, in connection with the September 13, 2007, robbery of the BB&T bank branch located at 200 South College Street, Charlotte, NC. On September 13, 2007, at approximately 9:21 a.m., Smith allegedly entered the bank and presented one of the bank tellers with a bank robbery demand note, which indicated that he was in possession of a bomb. However, no weapon or explosive device was observed or displayed during the robbery, and Smith allegedly fled the bank with an undisclosed amount of money. There were no injuries as a result of the robbery. Smith is currently incarcerated in the Mecklenburg County Jail on a $50,000.00 secured bond. Smith is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. |
