FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RBC CENTURA AND SUNTRUST BANK BRANCHES ROBBED
Charlotte, NC – The FBI Charlotte Safe Streets Task Force is seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the individuals responsible for two bank robberies that occurred in Charlotte, North Carolina (NC), on September 7, 2007.
On September 7, 2007, at approximately 10:05 a.m., a lone male entered the branch of RBC Centura Bank located at 1000 East Boulevard, Charlotte, NC, and walked directly to one of the bank tellers, to whom he tossed a bank robbery demand note. The demand note indicated that the suspect was armed; however, no weapon was observed or displayed during the course of the robbery.
After obtaining an undisclosed amount of money, the suspect fled the area in a small, older model vehicle, not further described. The suspect was observed entering the front passenger side of the vehicle. However, the driver of the vehicle was not sufficiently observed for descriptive purposes.
The bank robber was described as a black male, approximately 5’10” to 11” in height, medium build, and about 29 – early 30s in age. At the time of the robbery, the suspect was wearing a tan tee shirt, black jeans, and a light colored hat.
Later that morning at approximately 11:53 a.m., the SunTrust Bank located at 4441 The Plaza, Charlotte, NC, was robbed. Three males exited a Champagne-colored Dodge Durango SUV and entered the bank via a rear entrance. It is believed that another individual, not further described, remained behind in the SUV while the robbery took place.
All of the suspects who entered the bank were armed with semi-automatic pistols and/or revolvers. The suspects subsequently went behind the bank counter and removed money from the teller drawers. The suspects then fled the scene in the SUV with an undisclosed amount of money. About thirty minutes to one hour later, the SUV was discovered abandoned approximately two blocks from the bank. Subsequent investigation determined that the SUV had been reported stolen in Charlotte, NC, on or about August 26, 2007.
The three suspects who entered the bank were described as being black males, two of whom were about 5’9” to 10” in height and one of whom was about 5’3” to 4” in height. All three males obscured their appearances with white head coverings.
No shots were fired during the robbery. However, following the robbery, one of the bank customers was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for examination for a possible stress-induced condition. Otherwise, no one was injured during the robbery.
Investigators from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and the FBI Charlotte Safe Streets Task Force responded to the robberies and are still investigating.
The FBI Charlotte Safe Streets Task Force is releasing the attached images from the surveillance systems of the banks to help further identify the suspects. Anyone with information regarding either robbery is requested to contact the FBI at (704) 377-9200.
